Candle holders.
Crafted from leftovers sourced from Sonianwoods, I have tried to transform underrated wood into a sustainable product. Sonianwoods is a company based in Brussels that buys tree trunks removed from the Sonian Forest because they posed a threat, being either diseased or at risk of falling. This wood is full of weak spots and discolorations, making it undesirable for large-scale timber distributors. Sonianwoods appreciates these natural imperfections, and so do I. To me, these natural imperfections tell a richer story than a regular piece of wood. Despite being considered third-choice locally, it still possesses highly sustainable properties.
I enjoy experimenting with techniques that make a solid, heavy piece of wood appear light and airy. I try to achieve this effect by making a shadow gap of 0.5 cm as a base, creating the illusion that the entire piece is floating. By carving a groove in the center, stopping where the shadow gap ends gives the impression that the piece is split into two, resembling two floating wooden islands.
You can fit many candles in it, symbolizing a table full of friends and family gathering to connect with each other and enjoy a cozy evening together.

These pieces emerge from an intuitive process, where I start by gathering various wood pieces. Guided by their natural shapes, I explore creative ways to craft candle holders without relying on pre-made 3D designs or technical plans. The design evolves organically as I work hands-on, responding to the wood's inherent qualities and what feels right in the moment.
